Shirley J. Burt, 91, of Emmett, Idaho, passed away on April 17, 2024. Born Shirley Jean Ritter on September 10, 1932, to Edward and Mary Ritter in Emmett, Shirley was raised with her eight siblings, Harold, Violet, Velda, Elvador, Melvin (“Pete”), Lois, Edward (“Smokey”), and Marianne.
She graduated from Emmett High School in 1950 and, shortly thereafter, married Edgar Horace Dodd, with whom she had two children, Kathleen (Kathy) and Michael (Mike). Mr. Dodd's military career took the family out of Idaho, but after his death in 1954, Shirley and her children returned to her parents' home in Emmett. Subsequently, she met the love of her life, Arthur Wayne Burt, and they married in 1957. Over the next several years, the couple added to their family, to include four more daughters, Shelley, twins Connie and Carolyn, and Vicki. Shirley devoted her early parenting years to taking care of her husband, home, and children.
In 1974, she accepted employment with Gem County as Clerk of the Magistrate Court, a career that spanned over 20 years. She retired in 1996. Shirley had a passion for gardening, loved singing and celebrating Christmas, and she greatly enjoyed taking road trips with Wayne, and spending time with her family at their Cascade cabin.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents and siblings; her husband, Wayne; daughters, Shelley and Carolyn; and grandson, Tony Burt. She is survived by her children, Kathy Holomshek (George), Mike Burt (Angie), Connie Barnes and Vicki Bustos (Gilbert); grandchildren, Joe Burt, George Holomshek, Jr., Andrew Holomshek and Ashley Holomshek; step grandchildren, Kendra James and Jennifer Azure; great granddaughter, Callie Burt and step great granddaughter, Aspen James.
Services will be held on April 29, 2024, with a viewing at 12:00 PM and a funeral service at 1:00 PM at Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett, Idaho. Burial will follow at the Emmett Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of the Potter Funeral Chapel.
